Shackleford Banks Adventure Homeschool & Family Field Trip-June 24th, 1:15pm-4:15pm

We chose this location as an inspiring setting for learning and discovering, for viewing living history and encountering the wonders of coastal life.  Activities include netting marine life in the salt marsh, crabbing, and exploring how the banker ponies can live on a barrier island. The 15 minute ride out to the island takes you through the crystal clear waters of Core Sound.

The Eastern End of Shackleford Banks is a special place.  Steeped in history, rich in marine life, remarkable in its beauty, this is one of the most unique locations on the grand coast of North Carolina.  This end of the Shackleford Banks is bordered by hundreds of acres of salt marsh teeming with life.   Banker ponies are found grazing in higher numbers here than anywhere else in the state.   The vintage 1859 Cape Lookout Lighthouse stands a short distance to the south.   Explore these rich waters with dip nets and crab lines, and learn about the fascinating adaptations and social behaviors of the hardy Banker ponies that have roamed these remote shores for hundreds of years.   Dolphin are commonly sighted.
